Platonists' circle of patrons and friends included women. Women like Monica, the mother of St. Augustine, participated in philosophical discussions. The Stoic Muzonius Rufus argued that since women possess the same sorts of virtues as men they should study philosophy. Many women in Roman society, especially aristocratic women, were educated and did study philosophy.
