Bridewell became an institution run by a sub committee under the mayor of london, and it was run mainly by aldermen. The idea was that it was a charitable endeavour - like job training scheme. It was charitable in its conce on, initially,. But of course, it became one of the most feared london prisons with a terrible reputation. How does it go from being this place of intended benevolence to becoming the most fearedlondon prison? What happened? Probably right at the start, it established its own court. And that was probably the problem.
