A Portrait Is Not Quite a Portrait
The last time we looked at modern portraiture was in the context of degas and his dowr aunt, fanny. The juxtaposition of the two styles of painting in one frame exemplified dega's ability to see the world as it was changing around him. And sergeant, having come to paris to study at the ecolde de bazar in the mid 18 seventies, de gas, heyday, was deeply moved by and indebted to de ga's brand of empathic portraiture.
