Is the Whole Word Method Better?
Siegfried Engleman's Teacher Child to Read and a Hundred Easy Lessons. The whole word method where children are taught to recognize whole words via an interesting often rather indirect but apparently at least sometimes effective system because spelling is so difficult. No one's going to want to do a series of small step lessons to teach a child to read because they think that that will kill the child's interest in reading.
