Most successful neural networks people use today are very loosely based on the way the visual system works, at least as of 1950. The individual neurons have a learning algorithm that propagates information backwards and forwards through the network. And my impression, correct me if I'm wrong, is that neural networks start off pretty undifferentiated, right? It's just like a whole bunch of neurons. They're going to train themselves. And then wherever they go is wherever they end up.
