Lucy's Murder
Lucy was raped and then murdered in her parents' room. A DNA sample from her body provided no clues as the science for testing did not exist at the time. In 1999 a scientist managed to extract an incomplete profile from the bedspread where Lucy was found, this was matched to a DNA sample taken from her body. With continuing technological advancements a near complete DNA profile was found in 2003 but a search for the DNA database produced no matches. But crucially, detectives now knew that if in the future a suspect was found, a DNA test would reveal whether he was the person who had killed Lucy.
