"It's just the effect of gun culture generally. The threat always exists, right? And so the school shootings are different because there's a kind of randomness and a kind of senselessness that makes it so that nothing is a miss," he says. "I didn't know that it was a school shooting either, you know, but then I got to think about it and then it kind of just washed over me." He adds: "The fact that I had that initial response was pretty fucked up".
