Ideology is a modern thing, it's symptomatic of the modern world. It allows you to grapple with these extremely complicated questions in half a second. You don't have to compare history and policies that were similar in their effects on different people. And poverty is best fought by leaving things alone and letting competition reign. That's a little bit of an over simplification too.
