Benedict cumberbatch studied eguanas and commodo dragons at the london zoos reptilion house to prepare for the voice of smalg. He aimed for a tone that would bridge between animal and human, a deep and gasping guttural dryness to the voice. The actor says he wishes there had been two movies in return of the king so it could have made more sense.
