The Importance of Self-Control

Paul uses the metaphor of an athlete to show us what commitment to freedom takes. He wants them to understand that they may misunderstand freedom but he also wants them to know that you don't drift towards this type of freedom. It actually takes a commitment to work towards this true freedom.
