The Inquisitor's Argument for Freedom
I've always been pretty speechless before the argument the grand inquisitor famously makes in his book, the Brothers Kermazov. Do you think there's real truth in the inquisitors argument there, even if you don't want there to be? Yes, I do. And I think that particularly if I were not a person of faith, I would find it extremely convincing. But I think that true freedom is kind of an abstraction. To me, the idea of perfect freedom feels like a math problem. It's something that I can abstract, but ... we're all going to die.
