Joseph Smith used bank notes he'd already printed and stamped the prefix anti in front of the word bank making his notes say, Kirtland Safety Society Anti-Banking Company. By the time these rumors got out though, Joseph had already circulated $36,000 in bogus notes. Underneath that top layer of coins was just a bunch of sand.
