32 When Christ and his Saints Slept
The History of England
00:00
Stephen's Anarchy in 1139
Stephen was no longer so sure of his position with his brother and had himself built six castles without permission. So he called a Leggertine council in August and accused the king of violating clerical immunity but in fact the English and Norman Church both recognised Stephen's action as reasonable. It's possible that Stephen was jumping at shadows and that there was no plot but we simply don't have the evidence one way or other. The only argument in favour of Stephen not being a dipstick in this one for me is the complete inexplicability of it all. I'm going to have to give him this week's dipstick sticker.
