The Evolution of Birds' Gut Microbiome

The working hypothesis right now is that they have a very, very small subset of bacteria that stay within their gut. The majority of bacteria in there are these transient ones that come in with a new environment and immediately go out. There's also an idea that resident gut microbes may help the birds adapt to the changing environments.
