The Power of Self-Reflexive Practice

In the choice of subject matter to begin with, we would think that in the US, we enjoy complete academic freedom. Nevertheless, there are influences exerted by one's own advisors who tell their students, oh, this is definitely a touchy subject for you as a graduate student. So I wanted them to bring them into the book as part of the larger consideration. This is what happens when we write, engage, and deal with censorship. It's never just an external object that we study, that we can remain distant from but it filters into our very practice and it influences our intellectual formation.
