From 1980 to 1983, the Soviets launched one apocalyptic offensive after another against Masoud's forces in the Pan-Shir. Every time his Mujahideen drove them back. When artillery didn't work, the Soviets tried tanks. When helicopters didn't working, they tried high-altitude carpet bombing. It was like the 40th Army was pulling weeds in a garden, and every time the weeds grew back stronger and thornier than ever.
