No good essayist would try and turn this into an academic paper. That's not his goal. We can't hold him to something which is just not the function of an essay. When i write essays, i don't hold my self to that academic standard either,. But i certainly feel free to borrow from these ideas if i thought they were interesting. And one can always go and argue about spinoza and hegel and kan and whether they were right.
