Before the war, he had conceived the idea of putting a young man of rather innocent kind in a situation that would be morally dangerous. And what he thought of was a tuberculosis sanitarium in the alps where people from all kinds round and there's nothing to do but make love. The guiding principle that keeps you there or lets you go is mercury, hermes, the god who guides you to rebirth and wisdom through the abyss of death. So one is being guided by the god who is echoing t the temperature of one's own body as to what one's destinyis.
