George Fox and the Quakers
In Our Time: Religion
The Persecuted Quakers
Thousands of Quakers in prison. Pernicious persecution that goes with their refusal to swear oaths actually means that they can't get credit. They are impeded as tradesmen, which is very important to Quakers. So they suffer financially as well as reincarceration. Crowds would gather outside meeting houses, they'd destroy meeting houses and stone Quakers on the way to their meeting houses. There are still records of Quaker meeting houses being stoned by Anglican crowds in the 1730s. These were times of very, very brutal, bloody persecution.
