When we started the coin gold, it sort of flipped from being an open source technology to having at least a component of a closed source technology. So that's why it was valuable, right? It might sound a little strange to think of it that way, but gold is effectively representing that open source ethos in an analog monetary technology. When you introduce counterparty risk to a system, this is a problem in the security model.
