Ashley's first boyfriend, Matt, had been a kind of protector when Ashley was at school. But then he descended into addiction, and the relationship descended into chaos. There's a very strong part of us that doesn't want to believe something might be wrong for many reasons. A lot of her own denial, even if underneath it, there was an undercurrent of maybe something's wrong.
