Rico was a big star of the Temple City High basketball team and he wanted to make sure that nothing would stand in his way of going pro. Several colleges, including UCLA and the University of Rhode Island were interested in recruiting him but Rico didn't have the best grades or test scores. The final straw for Rico came in 1996 when he and two of his teammates at Arizona State were arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment. However, the charges were dropped because there were discrepancies in the two girls' stories.
