Is Genesis 1 an Account of Cosmic Origins?

I tend to think that that is something that happened at a particular point although some people would say it could have happened gradually but I don't know how we could make that decision. Genesis 1 is more interested in that it happened not when or through what sequence. It's trying to tell us who we are not some biological story that we would tell about how we got to be that way and so if we're going to try to think as they think so that we interpret the text well that might be a way that we can do that.
