Will AIs Become Conscious?
Will AIs become conscious or self-aware? I don't want to spend too much time here, but just of course, it's a question that actually comes up. And how would we know if they became aware? So one of my favorite quotes about AI is there's a guy named Dexter who was an early sort of algorithm pioneer. He said the question of whether an AI can think is no more interesting than the question ofwhether a submarine can swim. But probably AI will always be different enough from human minds that there are always people who say that's like not really thinking. If you pick any given task, it's very possible.
