This prop was not in the first shooting draft of the script. The master of the cold opens, aaron shur, wrote this story arc because he became the point person that they went to to discuss the creation of this prop. There is no scripted description of this machine. So phil needed to conceptualize design and build a working nutcracker prop that looked like it could have been a gun. And he had less than a week to do it. All in this prop cost about 19 thousand dollars. Also it was a won off.
