When the player's contracted, they can't leave for free. The longer that you have, the less time you have to worry about that. Clubs do have pretty slick insurance packages as well. So it's just ways for the club to know that they're actually de-risking themselves in terms of this player's career. It's important to remember that this is a linear risk model.
