The Myth of the Clan

The mythic nature, the striking aspect of this whole thing, there was quite a lot of invention of tradition in the development of what we think where the beliefs of clansmen at the time. The belief in a blood family was all persuasive. It was essential to give cohesion to the clan that this belief was cemented. And their role was to provide this necessary element, this vital element of security, which the remote state could not do. But it also gave authority to the chief and to those who were appointed by him at lower levels of the clan ship structure.
