The Origin of Ostracism

In the Athenian democracy, for example, they'd all vote once per year to select a citizen to expel from the city. And so Nietzsche basically says whenever somebody became too great and pissed everyone off by being too much of a threat outshining everyone, they could just vote to ostracize them. The role of the winner has to always sort of go unoccupied, or at least it can never be occupied very long by the same person because you need that potential for anyone to become the winner but paradoxically no one can.
