Le miserable is one of the most poignant, profound literary locales in all the french literature. We have javert foll his narrative arc and his moment of realization. He also impresses upon us this idea of the cyclicality of history. Despite reading these great books, despite reading victor hugo and george orwell and aldous huxley, we learn nothing. Human nature stays the same, and history is cyclical. But it's only the deta as that change.
