The Role of Morning in the History of Mourning
Women also wore weeping veils, different colored ribbons and other insignia that would indicate that a woman wasn't in mourning. Girls were given dolls that had black morning clothes and a little coffin so they could practice laying the doll out to be accepted by society. Of course for men, it was a little bit different. A black ribbon around the hat and black gloves sufficed; men were also expected to remarry quickly. In the case of children mourning their parents though and vice versa, about a year was normal.
