Philosophy Bites

CHAPTER

Loneliness and Self-Consciousness

I might be a bit perverse but I sometimes quite enjoy loneliness a little bit of it. It's not just solitude, it's actually then you throw yourself back into a more sociable self and join up with people without feeling lonely that wouldn't have the same joy. But extensive long periods of loneliness are terrible. We admit that that is a horrible condition for a human being to be in. You see this in very extreme cases like solitary confinement where people are broken by the lack of other people. And again that suggests that something philosophically interesting is going on. Do you think some of this has to do with the kind of philosophical issue about language being social?
