The Benefits of Maggots
Maggots give off a smell of ammonia when they're cleaning up the wounds. Why aren't they used more widely then if they're so good? I don't know whether it's education for other health care professionals, especially out in the community,. or whether GPs look at the cost of one unit of them and think, oh, that's too expensive. A lot of the district nurses or the disability nurses ring us here for advice - what do you think we should do with this foot or wound? And we suggest maggots as an option. So I think the word is getting out there more, not just hospital use.
