The History of the Spanish Inquisition
The first inquisitors are actually sent up to largely the south of France, which is right across the Pyrenees from the north of Spain. So we start to have inquisitorial activity there in the 13th century for sure. The Spanish inquisition, as you know, is established in 1478 and it is a royal institution. It's established by Ferdinand and Isabella king and queen of the newly united Aragon and Castile. At that point also, they're under like the auspices of the pope.
