The Early Days of a Bereavement
Adam Boom's wife, Kim, recently died after a long struggle with cancer. When he registered her death with his bank, it happened to be Barclays. Their bereavement service moved all the joint accounts into just his name. He thought that would be the end of things as far as dealing with their shared finances with concern. A couple of weeks later, he was shocked to receive a letter from the bank telling him he'd have to repay 115,000 pounds because his wife had died. It was a request that would have wiped out his entire life savings and forced him to sell his house.
