About a third of the world's soil is thought to have been degraded over the last 40 years. While Europe loses 9 million metric tons of soil each year, World Wildlife Fund says that half of the world’s top soil has been lost in the last 150 years. The Great Plains and the United States were once famous for their fertile prairie soil,. but the area was first overgrazed and then overplowed.
