The First Year of the Peloponnesian War

The Spartans arrived as they'd threatened too. They knew they couldn't breach the walls of Athens, and so they torched the countryside around the city. During this first year of the siege, the Athenian citizenry was keenly conscious that it had placed all of its livelihood in Pericles' strategies. Still, although the city was overcrowded and a cross-section of the citizenry was growling about losing their homes and farms, things looked good for Athens.
