Saline has saved countless lives throughout the world from like diarrheal illnesses and other hypovolemic states. The composition of the current kind of 0.9% saline that we use was actually developed by a Dutch chemist named Jacob Hamburger. He called it, quote-unquote, normal, which probably helped it gain widespread use even though it's definitely not normal.
