Orientalism and the Grand Tour
Because Europe had established colonies in the East, Orientalism wasn't confined to the page. It was popular for aristocratic youth to take a year or two off from school to study these ancient cultures. People would travel through and they would be unconcerned with what goes on around. They would look at these archaeological sites. The Grand Tour, like archaeology, focused on the past achievements of great civilizations from these regions.
