The History of Imperialism in Africa
The Berlin Conference gave the Congo River Basin to Belgium, and Leopold personally annexed the entire region. The settlement of the Congo issue touched off a race to claim as much land as possible in Africa. Imperial administration usually followed one of two models, creating a protectorate or annexing the territory outright. For Europeans, the resources of Africa allowed a higher standard of living and cheaper consumer goods like clothing, jewelry and food.
