In jefferson's time the mastodon and the mammoth were distinct but they were often kind of intermingled in the imagination. Mammoths are about 24 million years removed mammoths and mastons are in very different evolutionary lineages with mammoths being much more closely related to living elephants especially asian elephants. The key difference if you have just parts of the post cranial like the skeleton below the neck they're hard to separate sometimes right? You can really see the difference reflected in their teeth because the teeth really reflected different evolutionary history.
