Lonely people on average don't spend any less time with others than non lonely people do. And yet, if you think about it, we've all felt lonely in a crowd. Just because you're in the middle of Times Square on New Year's Eve doesn't mean that you feel connected to those people or close to those people. As Cachio Bo basically said: loneliness is how you feel about your relationships and that perception of it.
