The Poems of Thomas Mann and Joyce
Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain appeared in 1924 and Joyce's Ulysses in 1922. Both of these men were writing purely naturalistic novels. Each of them was using a literary device that promised something else, and that is to say the reframe. In Thomas Mann, he took this over from Wagner. They like motifs. Certain phrases come back, come back, key phrases, and every time they come back with amplified sense. For example, in Tonio, the blue-eyed blonde motif. What that represents. And the boy after all, we're not gypsies in the green wagon. We do have to be disciplined around here.
