Dostoyevsky's the Double
There is this theme of the divided self in dostoyevsky that runs through from beginning to end. The protagonist's name, raskolnikov, is a play on the russian rascal which means divided or split or ruptured. If you were observing some one suffering from skitzophrenia, and i asked you to put a name on that you'd never heard of it before, or whatever, said, this person, watch him for a little while and give me a name for whatever you're seeing. Ri it's interesting that we chose that particular terminology to describe some of the most fundamental forms of madness.
