The plane was flying in complete darkness through some pretty thick cloud cover, so the crew couldn't rely on their eyes to see where they were going. The crash happened 25 miles away from the airports, not that far the plane was just about to land. Ground controllers tried to get in contact with the plane, but there was no response. They realized that something terrible must have happened, and they knew they had to start their search for the missing plane.
