The Foundations of Competence in General Surgery

Causei: It might be easy to say, as we talk about things like the public trust and the quality of our product, which are obviously paramount. But there are relatively few operations that are done often enough in a typical residency programme for the resident to achieve some level of real competence or proficiency. And if they're critical part of a person's future practice, then i do think fellowship training or some way of assessing their practiced performance should be considered. Causei: We just have to be honest with ourselves about what level of assessment we're able to provide those domains.
