The Metaphor of the Church as the Bride of Christ

There is evidence against the idea that Jesus married Mary Magdalene or anybody else in the New Testament itself. There are a handful of passages in some of the Gnostic writings that could be consistent with that hypothesis. But even scholars of Gnosticism warn these writings do not have historical value. We would never have this metaphor of the church as the bride of Christ if there had been a Mrs. Jesus.
