Belief for a certain content, but in no way follows that that content has to be true. The underlying neurophysiology has to be such that it produces adaptive behavior. If we've got a good theory that explains how massive systematic falsehoods could arise in the human population and be maintained over generations, then that in itself is a pretty good reason for our supposing that we have a good handle on this better than their handle on science.
