The one thing I would caution people to do is have these conversations outside of the workplace. You can, if you feel like they're not going to be that open with you, volunteer the information first to see their reaction. Or you always play the friend card. Hey, my friend is considering a role doing this and this and this in New York City. What do you think they should ask for? Because then you're not actually extracting that information directly from them.
