The History of Black People in Haunted House Movies
I wanted to take New Orleans really seriously. It's a place that I love with my whole heart. My family is from Louisiana. So that makes of hoodoo and voodoo and Catholicism was something that I really understood in my bones. But then there's another piece of me that's like, there's a history of black people in haunted house movies. And it's not all very positive, particularly in the beginning of cinema. Usually black people, and frankly, this subgenre of spooky jazz, like Louis Armstrong and Cap Callaway, it's sort of like center around as being terrified of ghosts.
