When you don't know where the middle of the distribution is, finding out is really pretty valuable. How much health insurance should a person buy? The Rand Health Insurance Experiment showed that when people paid full price medicine, then they got less medicine than when they had free medicine. You have to look across many dimensions and figure out which way it goes.
